The process is simple and requires only a few supplies. If you are looking into creating an real stained glass window, make sure you visit our Stained Glass 101: supplies, patterns and inspiration for everyone

What You Need for Faux-Stained Glass Windows

Stained glass paint: You’ll need to buy some stained glass paint. This paint is specially formulated to adhere to glass and can be purchased at any craft store.

If you are looking into a weekend project with the kiddos, you may purchase something like Gallery Glass Paint, which not only is not permanent but once dried, you can peel off your creations and stick them on any other glass surface.

If you are working on a more serious project, make sure you choose the right paint as traditional paint is not formulated to adhere to glass.

There are specific brands like Vitral by Pebeo or Glass Colors by Colorful. These will provide the stained glass look that you are looking for.

Paintbrush: You’ll also need a paintbrush to paint your glass with the paint and make it look desirable. Some creators paint simply using a small stylus, but we recommend to have brushes handy to work on any small details. For faux-stained glass, soft brittles work best.

Masking tape: The masking tape will be used to create the design on your window.

Step-by-step Instructions

There are many ways of making a faux-stained glass window, but this one is the simplest of all!

First, use masking tape to create a simple design on your window. Make sure the tape is firmly stuck to the window to ensure the paint won’t run. Next, take your stained glass paint and a paintbrush and start painting the window sections. You can use a variety of colors to create a unique look.

Once you’ve painted all the sections, let them dry thoroughly before you remove the tape. Once the paint is dry, remove the masking tape carefully, and you will have a beautiful faux-stained glass window.

However, Mandi Johnson from A Beautiful Mess impresses me with her way of doing faux-stained DIY. She used craft paper to create the layout of the window, pasted the lead strips over the glass panel, and colored it the way she wanted. A bit unique and different, though! But I simply loved how her faux stained glass panel turned out.

Another interesting tutorial that came to my sight was by Leanna from Life of Leanna. She outlines in complete detail how to enjoy DIY faux-glass painting in a few simple steps. Using simple tools like masking tape and washable paints, she created an amazing piece of art.

How to Paint Glass Windows with Acrylic?

Another option for painting glass windows is using acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is an excellent choice for glass windows because it is easy to use, dries quickly, and is more durable than other types of paint.

The way Ashly from Abstract Boss paints her glass windows with acrylics makes me think how simple and beautiful it is to play with acrylics. She’s successful in bringing a vibrant and lively look to her home!

  3. Dry erase marker (optional): To draw the design on your window panel.
  4. Paintbrush and stencils: If desired, you’ll also need a paintbrush and some stencils. The stencils will be used to create the design on your window.

How to Paint Glass Windows Permanently?

You can use permanent paint if you want a more permanent look for your glass window. Permanent paint is an excellent choice for glass windows because it is durable and won’t fade or chip over time.

What You Need

Here’s what you need to paint glass windows with permanent paint:

  1. Sheet of glass: The first step is to purchase a sheet of glass that is the same size as your window. You can get glass cut to size at your local hardware store.
  2. Permanent or solvent-based paint: You can choose from oil-based and solvent-based paints. Professionals best use these paints because of their high price and toxic levels. These paints can permanently be applied to glass and create stunning stained-glass effects. Don’t forget to ventilate the area where you will be working on and remember this type of project is not safe for kids.
  3. Paintbrush: The easiest way to apply this oil-based paint is by using paintbrushes.
  4. Stencils (optional): You can also buy some stencils if desired. The stencils will be used to create the design on your window.

Step-by-step Instructions

Once you have all the necessary supplies, you can begin creating your glass window painting with permanent paint.

  1. First, clean your glass sheet properly from any dirt or resin. You can use rubbing alcohol or mineral spirit to clean the glass window from grease, oil, or rust.
  2. After cleaning, start creating a design on your window sheet. You can also use a stencil to create the design.
  3. Once the stencils (if you’ve used any) or you’re satisfied with the design you’ve created, take the permanent paint and a paintbrush and start painting the sections of your window. Make sure to paint in thin layers to ensure that the paint will adhere properly.
  4. Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the stencils, and you will have a beautiful glass window painting that will last for years.
